Harry Knowles – Chief Executive, Furness Enterprise says of ‘Forward to Work’:
“Forward to Work has been extremely successful with 80% of participants accessing work or further training. Our primary aim is to create jobs in the Furness area and this programme gives participants a better chance of accessing those jobs – the results speak for themselves.”
In the Autumn 2004 "At Home in Europe" reported the following:
80% SUCCESS FOR MOTIVATIONAL SCHEME

Furness Enterprise’s research and experience showed them that in some cases the lack of motivation to work was so ingrained that it would be an uphill struggle to get people into jobs. Their answer to this challenge was the Forward to Work scheme, which has enjoyed an 80% success rate for getting participants into employment.
Forward to Work has several elements, which Director Tim Melveille says are all vital to tackling the problem. He said “The scheme motivates people; helps them to think positively about themselves and shows them how to identify what they would be good at.”

One crucial part of the four week programme is a visit to he Lake District where participants get involved with outdoor pursuits and team games. Those taken on the course may be from families where no one works so the logic behind the overnight visit, says Tim, is simple. “Some people see it as a luxury, but it is so important to get them away from their usual environments. We try and make them feel special and get them away from the elements that are pulling them down. We lift their self-esteem and give them a positive view.”
The Forward to Work team then build on that confidence and provide a two week job preparation course with contributions from local employers, so that the job seekers can find out what businesses in Barrow are looking for.
Tim says that although a lot of effort is needed to get the scheme right, the many successes have been worth it. “The change in people when they get a job is unbelievable – almost emotional.”
